Winter weather advice offered amidst travel chaos

Following the onslaught of snow and sub-zero temperatures across Europe, Telegraph.co.uk's travel writer Nick Trend offers up some top tips to keep moving this winter.

Allowing extra time to travel to the airport during a bad weather spell may seem like a no-brainier, but Trend suggests it's one of the number one things to do. Holidaymakers who fear not making it to the airport due to conditions could always stay in an airport hotel, he says.

Keeping an eye on travel information online is also recommended. This is particularly pertinent for those travelling to areas where snow is anticipated, but holidaymakers shouldn't presume a flight is cancelled until they are sure. That's because they stand to lose out on their travel insurance if they don't attempt to make their scheduled flight.

While Trend insists that travel insurance policies should be read thoroughly in general, he says it's particularly important to look out for issues that are related to cancellations or delays.

For those travelling to European ski destinations this half term, of which SkiClub.co.uk says the majority are in excellent condition, Trend advises that it's essential to fit snow chains to holiday hire cars.

He said: "If you are skiing, and have hired a car to get from the airport to the resort, double check it comes with snow chains.

"Practise putting them on before you leave the airport," he added. "It is not complicated to do, but no fun trying it for the first time on a mountain road in the dark in minus 17C".
